Before he became one of the most famous footballers on the planet, Cristiano Ronaldo was simply the fourth child in a struggling family on the Portuguese island of Madeira.
And according to stories his mother, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, has shared over the years, his arrival came during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
The family had little money, limited space and already had several children to care for.
When Dolores discovered she was pregnant again, she reportedly felt overwhelmed.
She later recalled speaking with a doctor because she did not believe she could afford to raise another child. The doctor reportedly encouraged her to continue with the pregnancy.
According to her own accounts, she even tried an old home remedy in desperation.
It didn’t work.
Months later, a baby boy was born.
His name was Cristiano Ronaldo.
A boy who couldn’t stop playing football
Ronaldo grew up in a modest home in Funchal, Madeira.
His father, José Dinis Aveiro, worked as a municipal gardener and also had experience as a kit man at a local football club. His mother worked as a cook to help support the family.
There was nothing about his childhood that suggested he would one day become a global superstar.
Except for one thing.

From a very young age, Ronaldo was obsessed with the game.
