For dogs living in shelters, every day can feel like another day of waiting.
Waiting for someone to notice them.

For Major, that moment took more than a year.
The sweet dog spent an incredible 372 days at the Naperville Area Humane Society after being rescued from a situation where he was at risk of euthanasia. For more than a year, he watched other dogs leave for their new homes while he remained behind.
Then, one day, everything changed.
Major Was Given a Second Chance
Major and his brother, Hilo, were rescued from an animal control facility in Quincy, Illinois, where they were facing euthanasia.
The Naperville Area Humane Society stepped in just in time, giving both dogs another chance at life.
But while being saved was a huge victory, Major’s journey wasn’t over.
He still needed something equally important: a family.
Unfortunately, finding the right home proved much harder than anyone had hoped.
Months passed.
Then more months.
And eventually, Major had spent an entire year waiting.
372 Days of Waiting
Major was described by the shelter as a spirited, energetic and treat-loving dog.
He had plenty of personality, but finding the right home required some specific considerations. The shelter believed he would do best without cats, other dogs or young children.
Those requirements made his search more difficult.
But the staff never stopped believing that the right person was out there.
They even created “Major’s Day,” an event designed to draw attention to long-term shelter residents and remind potential adopters that some of the dogs waiting the longest can be just as deserving of love.
And eventually, someone noticed Major.
The Day Major Finally Got His Family
After 372 days, Major was adopted.
For the shelter staff who had cared for him for more than a year, it was an incredibly emotional moment.
They gathered outside to say goodbye as Major prepared to leave the only place he had known for so long.
The people who had fed him, cared for him and watched him wait finally got to see him walk away toward the life they had always hoped he would have.
And Major seemed to understand that something special was happening.
His tail wagged.

Major’s new owner is a semi-truck driver, meaning this wasn’t going to be an ordinary life for the newly adopted dog.
Instead of spending his days waiting inside a kennel, Major would be traveling across America with his new dad.
When Major climbed into the truck cab beside his adopter, the happiness on his face said everything.
After 372 days of waiting, he finally had someone to call his own.
No more kennel.
No more wondering when his chance would come.
Just a new companion, a new home and countless miles of adventure ahead.
